Unfortunately it's a fact of life that NIMBYs tend to be middle class, retired, well educated and articulate, meaning that they've got a cherished lifestyle they want to defend, as well as the time and energy and the connections and the knowledge of campaigning. I also think that a large proportion of NIMBYs are retired teachers so it's they who make the most noise, completely disproportionate to their size as a social group.
Mountain bikers suffer from the same NIMBYism as well as canoeists who want to paddle peacefully down rivers that happen to pass through huntin' shootin' fishin' areas like the
Ribble Valley.
I'm a member of a residents' group that campaigns against drivers who speed through our restricted street to take a short cut so I have plenty of NIMBY neighbours, some of whom are so embarrassingly batty that we try not to involve them in our
NIMBYism I mean.... campaign. Oops.
