There's a long history of tension between residents and cycling events in the new forest, its screaming NIMBYism from 1 or 2 people but lets not get the hatred thing out of proportion.

That just shows there are a couple or maybe even one dickhead/s in the new forest .
I have found drivers in London very polite so far this year and the two incidents I have had on the road have been caused by other cyclists not obeying the highway code and cutting me up

Unfortunately it's a fact of life that NIMBYs tend to be middle class, retired, well educated and articulate, meaning that they've got a cherished lifestyle they want to defend, as well as the time and energy and the connections and the knowledge of campaigning. I also think that a large proportion of NIMBYs are retired teachers so it's they who make the most noise, completely disproportionate to their size as a social group.

Mountain bikers suffer from the same NIMBYism as well as canoeists who want to paddle peacefully down rivers that happen to pass through huntin' shootin' fishin' areas like the Ribble Valley.

I'm a member of a residents' group that campaigns against drivers who speed through our restricted street to take a short cut so I have plenty of NIMBY neighbours, some of whom are so embarrassingly batty that we try not to involve them in our NIMBYism I mean.... campaign. Oops.

I think it probably is growing and highlights many peoples growing intolerance to others and to what they perceive as a "threat". Communities in that part of the world tend to be quite insular and resent intrusion into their world. Such a shame. It seems to be a particularly British thing. Can you imagine the same thing happening in France?
