There is nothing like touring the world on a bicycle for discovering that the world, and people, are basically good, as I found out in a very pleasant way when I left the old pearling port of Broome, and set out across the empty vastness Australia's Great Sandy Desert in the height of summer, bound for the iron mining town of Port Hedland, some 400 miles away.
