A thread for those kitchen essentials, new-fangled gadgets, non-food kitchen porn....

In my former years with I cooked from time to time, but the kitchen and cooking was very much MrsFF's domain. But now that I'm chief cook (but not bottle-washer) for @Hill Wimp I'm slowly getting round to sorting kit that works for me and what doesn't. The Motorhome and lots of outdoor cooking is also the opportunity to acquire more cooking toys that please me greatly!

So to kick things off, here is an essential old friend....my venerable cast-iron pan for the morning's fried eggs. Now fully seasoned it's as slippery as Teflon (with none of the Teflon downsides).

...and something new that arrived today!

Failing that I am a big fan of my electric pressure cooker and a old slow cooker. Nothing better than getting in from work with hungry kids and getting a decent meal on the table within 10 minutes.

I like my pressure cooker too. It's a bit more bruised than that shiny new one of yours FF.
It's something new to me, have never used one before. My thinking is it would be great to buy dry beans and pulses rather than canned, fast soup-making and gas-efficient in the Motorhome!

I'll start a separate thread on Pressure cookers and their uses....

Years ago i could prepare and cook say lamb chops, veg and potatoes, cook in a pressure cooker in less than half an hour total. The juices made excellent gravy as well.
It always bothered me they were made from aluminium and i used to (probably uneccessarily) worry about it leaching into the food. Havnt used one for years but they are supremely useful.

Soupmaker...one of the new ones. My wife got one and it makes fabulous, cheap soups from often reduced price veg. I'm not normally a soup lover but i happily eat it made in her machine.

I think Aluminium is fine unless using really acidic recipes. Teflon concerns me more.

Don't use the pressure cooker to cook fresh pulses: after soaking in cold water, pulses need to be boiled fully, lid off, for at least 5 minutes (I normally boil for 10), to release gases harmful to digestion.
Then simmer until tender.

I'm a hopeless tool freak so I've got these two. A solid lump of stainless steel for crushing garlic, etc, and a pair of evil poultry shears which are really good for crunching up bones to make stock in the trusty pressure cooker.
