Lefty tighty. Get it righty.
While we’re discussing format - is there an easy way to select the whole of a previous post, in order to copy & paste?
I find pulling the selection tab over a long post difficult on a phone.
Maybe I’m just being dim.

I just reply to the previous post then click the [] symbol at the top of the editor to put it into the mode where you can see all the controls. I delete the QUOTE And /QUOTE (they have square brackets round them but if I type those then it won't display). Then click the [] button to go back into ordinary mode.

Phew that was a bit of a ramble. It's easier to do than to type.

If we are very good @steverob may be along before the end of the year with some stats.
Had to wait until I got home to be able to access my spreadsheet!

As mentioned, 10 finishers out of 14 starters this year, with 2 out of 4 newbies, @MadMalx and @CarbonClem being successful on their first try.

At the other end of the scale, @Sea of vapours racks up his challenge 11th completion, @13 rider his 10th, @Ajax Bay and @Sbudge their 9th. It's eight years for @Dogtrousers, four for @Willd, three for @ukbabz and two for @geocycle.

There have now been 114 entrants to this challenge going back to the first edition in 2008 and 53 of them have completed it at least once, which is 46.5% of riders. If you count actual numbers of attempts and successes, then the completion rate is 56.7% (144 out of 254).

Good stuff @steverob – makes interesting reading.

The numbers are low (only 10 finishers) – does that represent a continuing decline (post-Covid?) or is it flat-lining?

Anyone – apart from @13 rider who’s already had a go – feel like posting an appeal for more entrants for next year?

I have plenty of time on my hands between now and the end of the year and I’ll try and do a similar set of stats for the Lunacy Distance challenge. Only 5 finishers in that challenge this year (with two more possibles) – which seems odd as there should be more finishers in that challenge than this one (given that you don’t need to do winter rides).

Congratulations to @Sea of vapours who was the only one to complete both challenges this year (again).

Good luck to everyone for the 2026 edition of this challenge.

The amount of entries certainly took a dive after Covid, although the actual low point was 2022 interestingly, but they have been slowly creeping back up for the last few editions.

If the met office is to be believed it should be cold and maybe rainy on Saturday but the risk of ice should be low, so I'm planning a ride probably sticking to known gritted roads.

Just putting this out there so it will be all the more shameful if/when I do stay in the warmth of my bed on Saturday.

Had hoped I could get a 100k done today and looking out the window the conditions looked OK, but then I got a warning text from the missus (who'd gone out in the car before I was up) that there was black ice everywhere - she'd seen three cars end up either in ditches or hedges in 20 miles. So I decided it was better to wait a few hours for conditions to improve and do a 50k instead.

Well done for getting the ride in. I almost got out as it was cold, no wind and quite bright but just too much ice about to relax. Had a good walk instead. Tomorrow is forecast gales and heavy rain!

I'm off!

Conditions here (S. London/N. Kent) were fine, if chilly. It's not been below freezing since about Tuesday. I set off planning to use my safety route, which is busy ish roads that get gritted. But as it turned out the roads were fine so I abandoned that and just noodled around until I'd accumulated enough distance.

It was cold - generally 2 or 3 degrees according to my Garmin but I was wrapped up well. There were occasional patches of sun even, so all in all a nice winter ride. No problem until the last 15km which was all downhill, and my feet, which had been fine, froze a bit.

I'll post on the ride thread once I'm warmed and cleaned up

Don't know about the weather conditions for the rest of the country, but here in the Home Counties the forecasts suggest it'll be rather wet for both of the next two weekends. However at least the temperature will be well above freezing overnight, so while it might be miserable to get a 100km ride done, at least it'll be safe (or, safer than it was this weekend anyway).

So it's either time to get the rain jackets out, or we'll only have three entrants to the challenge this year!
