In case you don't believe me :

9 seconds later today than yesterday. Still a couple more weeks of misery in the mornings though.

(if any solar system experts can explain why the latest sunrise and earliest sunset don't occur on the same day, please be my guest)

We've always said there was a noticeable change in evening light, quality if not duration, by Boxing Day.
we dont go round the sun in a perfect circle. Sun midday (when sun is highest in sky) varies from about 11:45 in mid jan to about 12:15 GMT. in Mid Nov
I think the darkest evening is about the 14th and darkest morning about the 30th (might be other way around) shortest day about the 21st
This explains it perfectly. Until the solstice we we will see less daylight but slightly darker mornings tend to account for this.

Mind this is all very good for light ect, but the coldest day in the northern hemisphere is the 19th of Jan (on avg), after that point we start to receive more energy from the sun than we lose.

Varies around the country which I never thought about either- today in Truro sunset is 16.18 according to Timeanddate.com, in Manchester it's 15.50 then way up in Edinburgh it's 15.38- 40minutes before my sun sets.
It makes sense when you think about it- but you can probably make up the OP's 9 seconds by cycling home towards the south.
