Went to see it last night, the FX are insane and like Jurassic World, it's a fun sequel.
I liked the lines referring to a mahoosive 3000 mile wide spaceship landing on Earth:

"It's touched down in the Atlantic"

"Which part?"

"All of it"

Also smiled when Brent Spiner got to say 'Get him to sickbay'.

I thought he died in the original Anyway I want to see it, can't beat a bit of sci-fi

Can't wait to see it. The original was cheesy but awesome, and I love Jeff Goldblum.

No, in a coma. Most of the original cast are back, minus Will Smith though. This one takes it to the next level and leaves it open for a third.....

(I understand that some CGI is usually required for sci-fi, unless we are going to go back to puppets, clay models or paintings, but I'd much rather watch Alien or Forbidden Planet than these CGI-fests.)

The third has been filmed already at the same time as the second. presumably for release on July 5th.

Done well it can look spectacular, however when it goes wrong it can be dreadfull.

Well, not giving too much away, the staggering CGI fest is when the mother ship plonks itself on our rock in space. It has it's own gravity, rips cities off the ground and then drops it all as the landing struts (the size of Everest) dig in, causing giant tsunamis. Oh, and Londoners will be pleased to know that just for a change, London bites the dust too as the ship spans the Atlantic ocean. Sorry London .

Just got back. I regret to tell you that it isn't very good, too much going on, too many characters and the three D was distracting.

That's why I don't go to see films in 3D. I really don't like it...

I agree. But it's hard to find decent screenings without it.

Same here, but it wasn't showing in 2D ( that's not a thing is it) at my cinema.

Life of Pi would have been a challenge without it.

I haven't watched it yet, but I have it on my PVR ready for a future viewing. I had assumed that they didn't use a real tiger ...

I did suggest that CGI sometimes needs to be used, but I prefer it to be used sparingly and only where necessary.

Take the Alien series as an example ... the aliens in the first two films were scary, actual physical things (animatronic models or a tall skinny man in an alien suit), whereas in Alien 3 there was an awful CGI alien rampaging about - BORING!

I reckon the total time that the alien was on screen in Alien would have been a few minutes at most, but when it did appear it was SCARY! (I went to watch Aliens with some people from work and one of them was so nervous that he put fingers in his ears and closed his eyes during the scary bits! ) Some of these new films probably have 30 or 40 minutes of OTT CGI effects which can't be taken seriously. Suspension of disbelief can only go so far ...
