I find it depends who you get to talk to and how well you lay out your case. I sold an industrial food blender, to a stupid person in london who was then amazed it was large. This was despite me explaining it was coming on a small pallet. She convinced e bay that she could send it back. Then did so and just put it in a cardboard box which it just fell out off. It arrived wrapped in the box and damaged. E bay decided the damage was minor so just got us to go halves on the money. It did not pay for the electrician to mend it.
Best to cancel a sale than sell to a ditzy person. Argue your case clearly from the first message to the person as if e bay are going to read it.

The alarm bells rang when the buyer sent their first message - unfortunately, this was after they'd bought and paid for the item.
As you correctly say, best to cancel if they seem ditzy
