Yes, Wikipedia is wrong in this instance. There's a world of difference between restoring to make a museum exhibit, and an airworthy example.

I'm a big fan of the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre, and in particular what they're doing with their Lancaster, but their site makes it clear that the Hampden is indeed being restored to static condition, not to fly.

Hardly an 'Invention', when the plane had already been invented.

Fair dos at the appearance and all, but I still hate the way people go on about them as if they single handedly won the war or whatever 🙄🤦‍♂️

I think you have to accept some if us recognise the wider picture, we've immersed ourselves in aviation to one degree or another. If I saw a Spit, I'd perk up, oooh lovely. If I saw a Mustang or Hurricane, I'd think the same. One doesn't 'have it' over the other, I'd simply enjoy that moment.

But for most people...the collective knowledge is Spitfire,, they're probably not really that knowledgeable, or bothered, about much else. Their loss, but that's the way it is

Whilst the Hurricane did the heavy lifting in the BoB, the Spitfire recorded overall more successes than the Hurricane across the whole of WW2. It was the darling of the people and that sentiment remains.

It doesn’t mean that other aircraft didn’t participate and make a difference, but the Spitfire was both effective and beautiful.

The government also promoted the Spit over other aircraft in terms of propaganda and "lifting moral"

which meant it got fixed in the Nation's consciousness

which has continued

Yes, I remember reading about how they had a Spitfire fund and a Hurricane fund and the public all but ignored the Hurricane one, even at the time.

Utterly bonkers! 🤪🤦‍♂️

Bader preferred the Hurricane, but he was a bit of an arriss so no one cares what he thought.

Why was he an aerosol?

Well, he believed his own hype, apparently, and wasn't afraid to let others know of his imagined brilliance.

I guess there may be something in that. The phrase "Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men" is oft attributed to him.

Yet if he'd obeyed the rules banning aerobatic fannying about he'd have not lost his legs.

If he'd obeyed the rules about keeping formation and not going zipping off for a dust up at the first sight of a tempting target he'd have probably not been shot down and ended up as a P.O.W. Indeed, no Luftwaffe pilot ever claimed the "kill" and examination of records post war failed to identify a candidate, so it is speculated that his inability to stick to the plan may well have ended up with him becoming a victim of friendly fire, the 'loss'of ampilot and a valuable aircraft.

And despite his history of rule breaking and consequential Class 1 Clusterfoxtrots he never missed an opportunity to tell anyone who'd listen how brilliant he was. I believe the Americans call that sort of fellow a "jerkass."

Sadly the general view of him is the warm and fuzzy Kenneth More person, which was a long way from the reality.

Many folk reckon he was a bigger nodder than Stirling Toss, and that takes some doing.
