The Problem With Owning Two Bikes

This thread is puzzling. If I'm out with the club or on a day ride, I'll take the club bike, light, fast and a dream to ride quickly. If I'm going on a journey, I'll take the touring bike; relaxed comfort with as much luggage as I need. Or there's the fixed, if I'm out on my own or with a mate on fixed.
Then there's the (nowadays little-used) road iron that I'd take out if I decided to time-trial again (though these days I'd have to dig out lights and a helmet because of stupid rules @matticus ).

When I only had one bike, things were peaceful. I'd go out to the shed and unlock the padlock. I knew the bike was getting excited at the idea of going for a nice ride. At the end of the ride I'd put the bike away and both the bike and I were happy and contented.

Then a second bike was added. The two sat side by side, probably having secret chats during the night. Then I'd unlock the shed, again, and both bikes became excited, each one wondering which of them would be going for a ride. I'd select one and go. I wasn't very happy, though, because I knew the other bike was sitting in that dark shed, and feeling sorry for itself. "Hmm (grumble, grumble). So he prefers that bike to me. Well, I'll teach him a lesson. I'll deflate one of my tires. No, that won't work because he'll just ride the other bike until my tire was fixed."

On arrival back home, I'd put the bike back in the shed and lock the door, leaving both of them in darkness. I could sense the hostility between the two, one of them all smug because it had just been ridden, and the other seething with jealousy.

The next day I'd take the other bike for a ride, and I'd feel sorry for the one left behind in the dark and all alone. But what am I to do? I didn't have this anguish when I only had one bike. And if I sell one of them to restore my peace, I'd feel bad because it would be wondering why I got rid of it. It might hate me forevermore.

How do other people manage when they own two or more bikes? I'm sure I'm not the only one who doesn't like to hurt a bike's feelings.

It's the same with a wife and a mistress.
They just have to know their place.

I think we have a solution to this problem of bikes getting rowdy in the shed. If your bikes are kept separate and don't know about one another then harmony ensues.....that is until they discover you've been sneakily riding other bikes!!!

As ever the maxim is don't get caught.

How would you feel if you were out and you met some other bloke riding your other bike?

My road bike has barely been outside since getting the ebike, but I got addicted to riding back in the hills I barely visited in '23 and '24. It's done a grand job of being ready on the turbo trainer for indoor rides.

You think that is hard to manage, try sharing just the one bike amongst your six children. Talk about hurt feelings.....

Six children? Perhaps a bit more cycling might have saved you that dilemma.

Are bikes like dogs?
Can they smell each other or each have some unique pheromone?

That distinctive blend of WD-40, chain lubricant and owner.

Dogs don’t use WD40 or chain lubricant...
Never heard a dog with a squealing chain, so there's only one possible conclusion: they obviously are waxing their chains.

To prevent envy and disfavour amongst the bicycles, I look after them every day, talk to them and give them special treats from time to time, like a nice cleaning here, apply lubricant there, nice little upgrades like TPU tubes (TPUbes?). They seem to appreciate that.

That reminds me of the time I brought both bikes in and put them in the living room because of the threat of serious flooding. A hurricane was due and we had to evacuate. I took a photo but must have deleted it. They looked so cozy on the living room rug but my wife, not understanding bikery, made me take them back outside after the storm passed.
