Try going tubeless to stop punctuation problems

But I hardly ever have "tubes" in my sentences, and they still get punctuated.

The question is, what's the purpose of this thread.
The question is: what's the purpose of this thread.
The question is: "what's the purpose of this thread".
The question is: "what's the purpose of this thread"?
The question is: "what's the purpose of this thread?"
The question is: "what's the purpose of this thread?".

I think the last one's correct: the sentence ends with a full stop because it's a statement, and the quote ends with a question mark because it's a question. Or is it even a quotation at all:

The question is: what's the purpose of this thread?.

Then...
Is the question, what's the purpose of this thread?
Is the question: what's the purpose of this thread?
Is the question: "what's the purpose of this thread"?
Is the question: "what's the purpose of this thread?"?
Is the question: what's the purpose of this thread??

I became all excited when I saw the thread title but it looks like I'm one of the few sad people who are bothered by this sort of thing.

Ah well. Riding along on my bike I thought,
"What is this thing called love?" which led to some pondering.

When I got home I saw that Mrs T had bought some monstrous garden ornament so I asked,
"What is this thing called, love?"

Well, if it makes her happy, I'll put up with it, though I did wonder
"What is this thing called, love."

I came to the conclusion that it was truly hideous.

"What is this thing called, love?
Apparently it's called "Love".

I was flabbergasted.
"What! Is this thing called "Love?""

After staring at it for a while hoping for an answer from it, thinking if I had a rock, a hammer and a chisel I could do better -
"What is this, thing called love?"

Nope. I just didn't get it.
