Mainly because that is what their business is. A bit like complaining that the local flower shop makes money by selling flowers. Or that the casino in town makes money from gambling punters.

I've been in the USA for the last week, and have used the suburban lines out of Boston a couple of times. Services are frequent and, as far as I can tell, efficient and well used, but it is crying out for modernisation and investment - there is very little electrification, the track quality is often awful and speeds slow, and great oversized diesel locomotives are used to haul short rakes of shabby and aging coaches - don't ever expect a clean window to look out of.
Yet all that said, it looks fascinating to a British railfan, and these are a few views at Concord and on the Rockport line in recent days.

Was in Wakefield Kirkgate over the weekend, now that is a bleak railway station. Only a solitary information board, no toilet and a vending machine wanting £1.50 for a pack of crisps - no thanks lol. Did see this coming through on the return journey:



Meanwhile in Sheffield I saw something called 'a tram', being from Leeds I had no idea about these and think they'd definately be a good idea up here! The service is lovely, very frequent I think really helps keep the traffic light around the city.

It was probably one of the (if not the) most dangerous stations on the network

Some more USA pictures from the New York area last week. The first ones are New Jersey Transit trains at Hoboken, a feeder station for New York via ferries across the Hudson. Again, busy commuter services but no electrification, largely loco-hauled, and in this case, neglected, dingy stations with 'repairs' that look like they'll never be finished.

This one is an Amtrak loco on the NE corridor route at Philadelphia, on a NY-Washington train.
