I have always been curious about plywood and block board. When you take a sheet of 8x4 and look at the surface grain, there does not appear to be any joins, it is as though the outer skin/layer/veneer is all one piece, how do they achieve this ? presumably it is not cut out of a piece 4' wide
Here's the process in more detail, they round the log and then spin it round and cut it into a continuous thin layer which is then chopped into 8 x 4 sheets, fascinating stuff!

It ticks me off when all you hear is that 'industry' and engineering is dull and uninteresting. It really isn't. It might be difficult and it might involve some thinking though.
I used to have a job where I would visit all kinds of factories and manufacturing places and I loved seeing all the ingenious ways engineers had come up with to solve problems. Food factories were especially fascinating.

...and from a previous life, here is my little baby. I wrote the spec for it, secured the patent and project managed the development .

If you think it looks a little comic for a precision measuring device then you are too North European, if you come from the Pacific rim then this was designed for you.

It wasn't that amazing a blade. I lent him the blade from my pencil sharpener plus my reserve collection to make up the length.

Wheres the joy of fire if you can't see the flames.?

Here's a good example of learning by discovery:

 • The teacher learned the folly of repeating a large exothermic reaction directly underneath a sprinkler system.
 • The pupils learned not to trust their teacher.
 • I learned how to transfer a video of the event by bluetooth from a pupil who didn't trust her teacher.
Yes, truly fascinating, must be an amazing blade on the machine, would it be a blade as in a traditional plane? . It shows two processes, creating a layer from the outer part of the log, then another layer from the core, is there a difference for what these two layers are used for.
It looks like the core produces lower quality veneers. The reason they use rollers for the core, rather than spindle centres (like on a lathe) is so they can get the cutter blade nearer the axis of rotation without fouling the blade on the spindles. I think the rollers also support the log better as it gets thinner and whippier.

Edit: Here's another one...

Right.
I here-and-now consider the gauntlet thrown, so here is my input to this thread.
As some of you may know, I work for a well-known maker of spacecraft and satellites, which naturally end up getting chucked in the general direction of up by a wide variety of rockety things.
And so it came to pass that I was in our canteen at work, watching a number of talking heads wittering on about the launch of Swarm. It was a fairly lengthy presentation, as may be seen thusly :-

And if you wish to sit through all 2:21:30 then you're a braver person than I.
And possessed of a substantially lower boredom threshold.
Anyhow.
The actual launch was shown in this video.

I'll fill in the details by saying that it was a foggy day at the launch site in Pletesk, so what you'll see is that at 59 seconds in, the launcher fires up, the stack takes off, and five seconds later it disappears into the murk.
And that's it. That's all we saw.
Enjoy!!
