Found an old USB " Disgo " memory stick tucked away at the back of a drawer. Loads of photos that I had copied from an old computer that I was ditching. Fortunately I had the good sense back then to organise the folders by date ( 1998, 2000 etc ). By coincidence there were photos of myself and Mrs Tkk running the New Forest Marathon and dated 10 September 2000 😮

On my ride yesterday I went through Moore nature reserve
on the approach road there is an industrial estate and just before that is a right angle turn and a railway bridge
I let a lorry pass me and when I got to the bridge he was stopped blocking the whole road
and the driver's door was open and someone - it turned out to be the driver - was standing outside
I pulled up wondering what was happening

as I stopped he looked and me and said
"It says 15 foot 8 but I not f******g trusting it!!"

I looked up and saw that his load was just inches from the lowest part of the bridge - which was actually some cables in metal sleeves (which is a bit dodgy in itself)
and the clearance between the bottom of the bridge and the top of the load was - from the look of it at ground level - less that inches and possible negative!!

I could see why he had stopped!

we made a few comments between us that are not suitable for publication and I asked if there was any way he could lower the trailer at all

he looked at me then said "Oh yeah"
and jumped into the cab and pressed a button and the front of his load slowly dropped severl inches

he was still looking up and wondering when I left

but I did wonder why some ex teacher who have never even been in a lorry thought of that
when a lorry driver who has enough experience to realise that his load was damn close to a bridge on a route that was presumably cleared for it
didn;t

anyway - as I approached the warehouses a small truck was heading out which I resume was help for him
it was certainly a case where an extra set of eye outside the cab would be a good idea

I was wondering why the lowest point of the bridge was a run of several cable - which could have been on the side
maybe there is a reason but I can;t think of one!!

I'm not bomb-proof but, as a HGV driver, you should always know the height of the trailer/load you are pulling.
Not always easy with flat-bed trailers, I know, but it's still the driver's responsibility.

FYI Some trailers are marked up in Metric, most in Imperial. Some say the height of the box, not height from the ground so you have to know the height of the 5th Wheel (The Scania i drive has a 5th Wheel height of 4' 3") and add the two together to work out running height.

HTH 😂

Slightly off topic but when I used to drive 3.5 tonners I was always mesmerised by good artic drivers, particularly when watching them reverse

Does anyone else think the company name is a little ironic?

I was planning a rid e this after noon but apparently we needed to do some very important shopping

well over 3 hours wandering around jewellery shops, Home Bargains, The Range and Next!!!

anyway went for a ride when we got home

got to a park/nature reserve and rode through. The end of the road is next to a sewage farm and the access road had clearly just had its hawthorn hedges trimmed
I noticed and swerved out into the middle of the road

and heard a clicking noise

a 2 inch twig of hawthorn was stuck into the tyre!!

I pulled it off and it came off with a 1/2 inch thorn coming out of teh tread
and another staying in between the knobbles on the tyre!!

I decided it might be the better thing to just head home the quick way rather than carry on to where I was heading

got home and all was OK
dug the fragment of thorn out and there was no hissing noise and after a couple of minutes the tyre was still hard!!

so maybe the Swalbe has done its job - not Marathons but still
or maybe I put some sealant in it - can;t remember it was well over a year ago

anyway - I'll check tomorrow

who likes Hawthorns

WE DON'T
