I haven't had a digital watch for many years

I used to have a waterproof one that I used for sailing but when that broke I was no longer sailing much

when I won some money I spent some of it on 2 watches that were quite expensive and I use them all the time now
they are analogue and do not have fancy wifi and all that!!

I’m a double wrister! Garmin on the left and Apple on the right.

I'm in a David Lloyd "health" club. Mrs P is in yoga. #1SP is tearing round the play area while we wait for lunch to arrive. Getting lunch with less than 700 calories is almost impossible. I'm on omelette for 375 cals.

@Dave7 you mentioned HR on your treadmill. 88 average I think you said. I just walked flat out for 2.6 miles in 43 minutes. Average HR 96. Strikes me your doing OK.

Thank you.
Mine was actually 82 after 20 minutes steady-to-brisk walk.
Mr Google tells me that a rough guide is 240 minus our age then divided by 2.
In my case that's 240 - 78 = 162 ÷2=81.

I don't know if the above is scientific or gobbledegook but it was spot on for me.
NB
This morning I increased the speed (still comfortable) and my pulse showed between 82-90.
Of course, I don't don't how accurate the treadmill is.

Without an HR monitor it's hard to be sure of accuracy. I imagine the treadmill has something you hold on to? I wouldn't expect that to be accurate. If you have a smart watch depending on the type, age etc this will probably be accurate within 10 beats. You can gauge the accuracy of any device by taking your own pulse foe 30 or 60 seconds. Taking your own pulse at the neck is very easy.

My old Garmin watch was 10bpm too high, my current Xiaomi is spot on.

Those HR guides are pretty good though you will find plenty of people who dismiss them. It's good enough for the general population but probably not for serious athletes.

I'm far from serious but if thinking about maximum HR. The general rule of thumb is 220 - age. That makes me 220 - 71 and maximum HR 149. I'm fit and know my true maximum is 162. I can sustain 156/157 for 18 minutes.

Further to my post above......in hindsight it cannot be correct..... otherwise the younger you are the higher your pulse would be
......back to the drawing board.
The few I've looked at give similar figures, so you're in the range. Don't fret too much over getting it exact.

This is copied from the British Heart Foundation website

•deduct your age from the number 220 to get your maximum heart rate
  • calculate 50 to 70 per cent of that to get your target heart rate.
For example, someone aged 60 years has a maximum heart rate of 160 bpm (220 minus 60) and 50 to 70 percent of that is 80 to 112 bpm.

Best pals are brilliant. My Chromebook froze this morning.I could not even turn it off.So phone call, free coffee and cake if you can fix my Chromebook.Over he comes, thirty mins later it is up and running again. So I ask what was wrong with it.Nothing serious ,an ID 10 T error. He said write it down for next time,so I did.Ok I will remember that.

Good effort!

My guess is that that is somewhere in Zone 1 (low intensity) for your age ie 50 to 60 percent of maximum heart rate.

A very good place to start and hold until you are ready to step things up.

I am no expert, mind. But at our age it is best to consult your GP before cranking things up.

I see in the local chip wrapper that dog walkers are being used fairly target by privately employed council wardens.

I had one approach me a while back whike I was out with Bruce and he demanded that I prove that I had poo bags with me. I did, but that's not the point - I was doing nothing wrong andnhe wasn't the police, merely a private citizen with no powers. So I said to Bruce, "come on Ben", and slowly walked away while completely ignoring the nodder. After a few hundred yards he gave up following me and went to look for easier pickings.

Do not engage with private citizen contractors employed thus by councils - they have no powers and if they dont know who you are there is nothing whatsoever they can do. Not a sausage. Just blank them as if they weren't there.

I am sure that you are a responsible dog owner/walker, but...

Are you suggesting that "genuine" Police Officers should be tasked with enforcing dog fouling laws (including the littering of our streets with "poo-bags" containing "poo" which have been discarded, rather than appropriately disposed of?
