These days I become homicidal after 4 hours in London.

Our offspring are both down there, so any chance we get we will have a day or more there 👍
So many things to do - museums, galleries, shows, even a few nice pubs & restaurants dotted about - we love it!
Heck, we had a little work reunion a few weeks back in the Pride of Spittlefields - beer at a fiver a pint, astonishing for London 🤣🍻
Mind you, I spent a good few years traipsing about there from time to time with work, mostly visiting customers, & MrsMikeIoW was based in Holborn for 15 months once.
Always happy to get home, but we do enjoy the buzz of a big city from time to time 🤷‍♂️

Good morning from a grey overcast Dorset. I will head out soon for a walk/jog as I have not been out for over a week with half term commitments. Just a steady bimble to wake the system up. Will phone the vampire hot line shortly, I have an appointment with the consultant on Thursday so they'll want to check my latest bloods. Must remember to make sure I'm fully hydrated, as apparently popping in for a blood test towards the end of a longish training run can skew the results DAMHIKT 😁

The noise, the dirt, the litter, the crowds, the rudeness, the inability of locals to obey even the simplest rules, regulations or laws...

I went out with a lass in London in the late 80s for a while and even then I had to grit my teeth.

Ha!
Also went out with a lass who studied at UCL in the 80s….we had a great time.
Courtauld Gallery, John Soanes Museum, various Tate galleries, Churchill War Rooms, Horizon 22, Sky Garden, so many parks, Borough Market, The George pub….sooooo much to see & do 😎
Avoid Oxford Street (although DD works opposite Liberties, with a private work bar serving Guinness at £2.60 a pint 😜)
Sure, there are crowds in shows, Covent Garden, etc etc, but without those crowds, you don’t get the shows and markets 🤷‍♂️
I find it much less dirtier than back in the 80/90s (maybe that ULEZ has done something 🧐)

BUT…this is the retirement thread, so it is natural to prefer things a bit calmer, I get that 👍

Both my parents were Londoners, I was born here and spent many school holidays playing in the bomb sites with my cousins around Bermondsey so I’ve always felt that it’s home from home.

Riverside trail walked in the showers. I see they have just started work on a new bit of path that joins the walk. It is to take at least 6 weeks. Not sure why they pick the wettest time of year to do work on the ground. Maybe just so there's less disruption?

Went to a conference at the Barbican many years ago

It was for a new networking system on Dec computers

Most people there were clearly "manager" type people who had zero chance fo ever understanding most of it
but "needed" to be there so they could show how "down with the techies" they were

Lunch was included

it was a very trendy lunch - lots of salad type stuff and very low on the sausage and the like
I got a few things I recognised and a variety of other bits to try

I got talking to some bloke who turned out to be a techie like me (at the time) and we were talking about the food

I commented that the green stuff I had was a bit weird
I was trying to work out what it tasted of
and came t the conclusion it tasted of absolutely nothing - nothing at all
even less that water

he looked at it and commented "Ah yes - in that case I think it is probably avocado"

In the last thirty years I've been to Heathrow once, never again. I also had to go into London to King's Cross, then take the tube to Liverpool Street Station before getting a train out to Ipswich. Unfortunately I then had to reverse the journey three days later. I really didn't enjoy it. Just not a city boy.
