One thing, don't know if there's been a separate thread on this but all the water related deaths during the heatwave are awful.
15 now so far. I'm stunned though that some were a week ago yet still happening, don't the people learn? If not the poor kids who it's seems to be the majority at least the parents should be aware of what's happened and if not stopping the kids from open water swimming then educating them of the dangers of cold water shock etc.

Sorry, not the cheeriest topic for a Monday morning but it's something that's been nagging at me.

As a (previous) scuba diver that used to train in quarries and lakes......even with semi dry suits on the shock was amazing. You hit what is called a thermo clime. It literally takes your breath away so even with scuba gear on it hurt. Those people who jump in have no chance against it.
As you say, the parents need to be aware and drill it into thier kids.

You maybe self confident and 100% happy in life but there are people like me that need help and advice from a confidential source. I can pour my heart out to Uncle Drago and be confident that no one else will know of my erhh uhmm shall we say intimate problems.

Yes - always happens because people do not learn

The local paper has an article about the Lifeboats having to rescue people from Hilbre Island on The Wirral

As I grew up round there I know the area well
I also sailed there a lot for quite few years and knew the tides

and I walked out to those islands often
the signs about the tides are everywhere and locals all can see how the tides work


and still whenever the weather is good people get stuck

I see it is all the fault of the school and teachers again
sigh

One of the parents of a deceased child was banging on about how it should be taught in schools about the dangers of jumping into cold water when the air temperature is hot.
How about the parents taking responsibility for educating their offspring against doing this kind of activity.
It's the same when a child/youth gets killed whilst playing on the railway.
It's always someone else's fault.

Agree it's parents responsibility. However if it was also taught in schools, on social media - which is where 99% of kids will get information etc then even better. Unfortunately not all children have a stable home life so parental education may be lacking.

I do sometimes wonder if I learned not to jump into cold water

and play on Railway lines

from just my parents or from things like Scouts and Cubs

I do remember people I knew going to old quarries in Wales when I was a teenager
I never went - because, basically, people die doing that

@BoldonLad, this is brilliant. Gargrave is about an hour by car for me and 2½ by bike. I had no idea these people existed. I will be visiting. I'm after something very similar but a "reverse trike" if you get my meaning. Tom's balance isn't great and I no longer feel confident with him on the back of our tandem. A "reverse trike" would solve this issue and I could probably encourage his carers to take him out on something more stable. His house is within 30 yards of a cyclepath that leads to Preston Guildwheel, a 22 mile circular route round Preston. Tom loves cycling but needs the right kit.

There are a number of trike makers and some do tandem. My wife needed a trike after she had to have the balance organ on one side removed. We struggled to find anywhere that did trikes that she could try out till we visited our daughter in Newcastle and found these people https://www.activenorthtyneside.org.uk/adapted-cycling, she went to a number of sessions and tried out a number of trikes. These are quite expensive pieces of kit and it was amazing how little difference there was between what she could and couldn't manage, they were extremely patient. There might be something similar near you.
