Speaking of getting things off your chest, every week I accompany Mrs Tkk who is a walk leader for a group that was originally a council initiative " Poole Health Walks " but they have been gradually withdrawing their involvement. A regular dozen plus walkers, mostly oldies, some recently bereaved. It's a mixed bunch and we all get along well, there's even a budding romance between a couple of them, one in his 90's 😎. There are a couple of ladies who take the less challenging route and I accompany them. They're both well off but crikey do they moan about anything and everything. I will try to steer the conversation in a more positive direction but they will swiftly turn it back to something negative. It does get quite wearing and it's usually instigated by the one lady who can be a bit Hyachinth Bucket. I can see myself snapping soon and pointing out that their conversations are overwhelmingly negative, but that will probably give them something else to moan about. Ok, thanks for listening, rant over 😂

I generally get along well with my little group of drinking pals, but, there are a couple of them who annoy me, when "certain subjects" are raised.

There are six of us "in the group", being true Brits, no-one discusses their income, but based on jobs, before retirement, it is not difficult to guess at the "pecking order" of affluence. Two of the group, who must be in the "upper group" are just so obsessed with not spending anything. Personally, I don't believe I am a spendthrift, but, recently, due to changed circumstances, connected to my wife's health, I mentioned that I was researching a change of car, which involved not only looking at car reviews (online) and financing options (including cash). They both became obsessed with questioning my logic for "spending all that money on a new car, at my age". I just don't understand them, they are "comfortably off", I am sure enough "spare" to leave their children a bit, why not just enjoy the. time you have left, and stop obsessing about their bank balance. Enjoy what you can, when you can is my motto, you never know when it may all come to a shuddering stop!

Quite right

We have some savings - but we do not try to save money
Although I do have a problem with spending money on myself
My wife is constantly trying to get me to buy the things I want rather than muttering that it is too expensive and the cheaper one will do

I can spend money on her - but not myself

but some people are even more weird!

My thoughts exactly. I have a (very) small private pension but was fortunate in that when I was 63 my best customer asked if he could buy my business.....it was a no brainer.
My problem (possibly others are the same)......as I've got older and especially since Sue died i dont have the desire for "luxury" things eg holidays abroad.
My car is a 65 plate with maybe 20K on the clock......I can afford to upgrade but why?
I fully understand your needs and agree..... go for it.

I agree that you should buy the car. Life is too short to completely worry about what might happen.

We adopt a prudent approach to spending. As long as our projections show that if the worst happens to me (it might following my diagnosis last year) and Mrs SD will have enough to live comfortably on well into old age (she will) then we are happy to spend away.

The problem we have, is that we don't need to spend much and don't really want to do much. We get a new car every 4 years (PCP) but it is always a small car these days, we have done the fancy car stuff years ago, plus we did all the big holidays we wanted to years ago. We obviously give a chunk of money to the kids each year re 7 year rule. But beyond that what do we do with it?

Still, the money is there if we should change our minds.
