Correct me if I am wrong, but I think the UK is the only country in Europe with two different dates for seasons to start. Crazy.

Meteorological seasons are an internationally recognised scientific convention for weather sorts. The only difference is we have the Met Orifice that constantly remind us of it, so it has entered the public consciousness over here where it perhaps has not elsewhere.
I'm with you, orbital mechanics is the determinating factor for the change of seasons and is the one I take heed of.
