Just had a really worrying letter from DWP asking for almost £16,000 from the estate of Mrs Tenkaykevs late brother. He died intestate and as he had not worked for 20 years due to a nasty chronic illness, and lived in Social housing the amount of money in the estate ( a small insurance policy and a couple of thousand in a Post Office account ) was not enough to cover the Gas / Electric / funeral expenses so we all chipped in to pay the outstanding amount. The letter says if you pay out money from the estate then you have to repay it to DWP. There's 2 perids listed from 2010 -2015, and 2017 -2020. The amount is stated to be from overpayment of Pension credit. No breakdown or explanation, just a demand for payment by 19th of this month. The letter came out of the blue, the funeral and settling of the gas / electric / waater bills was made a few weeks ago.
Obviously the money isn't there, but it's upsetting for this to arrive now, are people expected to hold fire on funeral arrangements on the offchance that a bill will arrive from the Government several weeks after the Funeral.🥲

DWP are really crap to deal with.....you just can't get to speak to a real living person. And its at a time when your mind is in turmoil.

Are the executors in any way liable? If the money's not there, and they haven't been dishonest or negligent, the DWP has to write it off, surely?
I've been an executor once. No, they're not liable. If there is not enough money in the estate to pay off debts they are indeed written off. They can't take a dead person to court, and if theres nothing left there's nothing left.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.

Tell them to trot on and take you to court. There isn't any money so they can't take anything from his estate. And you are not liable for his debts.

Maybe contact one of the newspaper people who deal with financial inaccuracies. Tell them the story and they can contact DWP. That will shift them abd don't forget to mention all the stress and mental anguish they have caused.

Those people are like blood suckers.

Upsetting, indeed.

Working on the assumption that we do not have "joined up" Government, despite it being the 21st century, perhaps, DWP are not aware that the cupboard is bare? My first approach would be to write to them and advise them of this (with copy of documentary evidence, if available), and see what happens.

Anyway @classic33 ....a dream for you to sort out. It was short but vivid.
The dream.
I received a letter from the bank together with a cheque for £2.58.
The letter explained that one pound was a gift so I wouldn't feel lonely. The £1.58 was for postage, which made no sense as they had posted it to me.

As I say, it was very vivid but (in hindsight) made no sense.

Simple, premonition.
They are about to send, or have already sent a letter on which there is insufficient postage. You will be required to pay to receive this letter. Hence paying you for the postage, they've realised their error and have given you an extra £1 so you don't feel left out, thereby closing off any avenue of complaint you may have.
