I feel bad
I got a phone call from someone this morning

It was Daisy
funny how Daisy seems to be such a common name among people from the Indian Sub Continent
but who am I to judge

anyway - she works for Virgin Media
and was very worried about problems they have detected with my broadband

we had a nice conversation about how I was and how she was
then she explained how they had - verty worryingly detected some problems with my system
and how this might explain how my broadband was sometimes slower than usual
she asked - very nicely - if I had noticed this
I really hadn't but - you know I'm getting on a bit so I might not know about these things

anyway - she asked about how many devices I had connected - maybe my TV
which I agreed with - it has a yellow wire going into that back of it

she asked about laptops and mobile phones

I explained that I won;t have them in the house becsaue they are evil

there was a pause
she asked again abotu the slow speed and I said I had noticed that people do speak slowly on some programmes

she asked if I was watching these on a laptop

so I explained again how I don;t have these in the house because they are evil

she asked if other people had problems in the house

I told her that it is only me because....

then she got cut off for some reason

I am upset

I never got to explain about the witches

should I log this on Drago's advise column??

maybe she will ring back

I want to talk to Daisy again

I have thought of more stories for her

For F***s sake don;t talk to a retired system administrator about "problems on the broadband" when he is bored

Dragons will ensue

and maybe witches

please ring back Daisy

especially before my wife gets up and I am bored with morning TV
I wonder if Daisy rings back could you ask her this question from Bob Leeds.I am a Virgin Media customer, and at Christmas we got a bigger telly.Gone from 32" to 45".I am worried about using the extra ink in colouring the picture.I don't want a big final bill when we go Freeview and tell them to stuff their increase.

Except they didn’t develop it.
They bought the system from the lowest bidder, Fujitsu.
They then refused to look at the clear evidence that it was not fit for purpose, and instead pursued their own witch hunt of sub postmasters.
A fair old summary at good old Computer Weekly here, who did their utmost to pursue the truth - scroll down to see just how many articles they wrote over the many years.

Just awful.
& now Sunak and Starmer refuse to call out the evil Paula Vennells, who really should be behind bars. & Ed Davey claiming he was misled by the PO back in the day…..that’s how good he is as a leader 🙄

Still. There are boxes of decorations to be put back in the loft tomorrow, & some wood panels to be painted, so not everything is bad in the world 🤣

Yes, I remember reading the Computer Weekly articles and have followed the Post Office scandal radio programs on BBC radio.

The Horizon software accounting system was written in Visual Basic 6 in the late 1990's.

This Visual Basic 6 accounting system application was run on a MS Windows operating system in the 1990's.

Horizon's accounting system used a Rapid Application Development (RAD) for software development. (This RAD is based on prototyping. Later evolving to Agile methodology.)

I worked as a Software Development at this time, Visual Basic 6 applications and the MS Windows operating system were not known for their robustness. (And, I'm being kind.)

"Visual Basic 6.0 was selected as the most dreaded programming language by respondents of Stack Overflow's annual developer survey in 2016, 2017, and 2018."

Visual Basic is in the Guinness Book of Records:
"Most "dreaded" programming language"

I went for a run earlier, I am now feeling very tired and have just had a message reminding me that tonight is our running club AGM. 😮

Just come back from a ride

did get a bit muddy at the end and there were a lot of walkers at the start - but nice to try a new route

then all the way home into a head wind I hadn;t realised was there!

I wonder if there were any known Horizon software dependencies where there was too much money left over not less in the Sub Post Office accounts after their end of day balancing?
