Good morning, heading up to Wimborne shortly, there's a visit to " Spill the Beans " then the Burly Baker and finally the book shop to see if I can get tickets for a couple of talks at the Literary festival which is held in May. One is " The unnatural history of Britain, a jourey in search of our obscure and non native species " , and the " History of Forgery ". Martin Clunes will have a on stage chat / interview with all proceeds going to a local childrens Hospice. Last year we went to the Alexander McCall Smith chat / interview and it was excellent.

On the topic of HMRC my wife rang them the other day

Problem was that as she now is officially old get the OAP then that puts her over the taxable income amount for the first time in year

So a few years ago she contacted them to transfer her remaining marriage allowance to me

has to be done over the phone - with a wait time of up to AN HOUR!!! - because she cannot use the online system as she cannot prove who she is
the only acceptable ID she has is her passport which is not enough!!!!

anyway - less of that

so she finally got through to someone (good job we are retired!!) and told him that she need to stop transferring the remailing bit of marriage allowance to me

should be simple

anyway - turns out that her allowance had been transferred previosuly
but only for one year - the "and until further notice" bit had not been actioned
I mean - it was quite clear - why on the name of all the Gods (real and not) would we want it to be for only one year!!

anyway - he then needed some details
like the exact date of her divorce from her second husband (I am number 3) and the full names of both her previous husbands
and the NI number of then
(honestly - her first has probably never earned enough to pay tax based on what she has told me about him!!!)

anyway - most of that was just not available
she could estimate a few thing but I said not to in case it was recorded as "supplied information" rather than an estimate and failed a check!!

but eventually he went off for about 10 minutes with us on hold - and came back saying he had sorted it out
I suspect he went to talk to the one with the brain today
so it was supposedly sorted but we filed it under "give it a few weeks and check"

Anyway - I got 3 emails from HMRC today showing I have tax re-calculations for 3 years

and the owe me nearly £2000!!!

no idea if it is right or not
or for that matter how I will get paid (need to check that out) but sounds like they have sorted something out!!

That is strange, AFAIK the MA is automatically assumed to be ongoing unless HMRC are informed otherwise.

Certainly was in our case when Mrs SD transferred her MA to me years ago.

As an aside, I assume you also use your good lady's Starter Savings Rate Allowance of £5k for other 'marital' investments?

Yes - it was rather weird about the MA not being continued

I can understand that there are some circumstances where it can be for just one year
but the default should be - "and from now on" - especially when it is clear that the only income of any kind is from a rather small pension

But the whole call was weird with them asking for ancient details from her previous marriages - from well over 10 years ago when this was about stuff from the last few years!

And Thanks
not heard of Starter Savings Rate Allowance - another thing to check on!!

including trying to work out what this morning 3 messages from HMRC are trying to say

it took be 3 "goes at looking at" to realise that the 3 messages showed that they owe me money

but the amoutn the owe was increasing because it was including the previous amount
and was not 3 separate amounts

it is really not clear

which annoys me
I am used to looking at numbers and things
I know a lot of people who are not and a message like this may be technically accurate
but could not be better designed for making a lot of people scream and run for the Hills!!!

The Starter Savings Allowance gives everyone an additional £5k pa tax free on interest received above the Personal Allowance.

It is reduced by £1 for each £1 of other income received above the Personal Allowance.

This is one of the reasons Mrs SD (non-worker and below pension age) holds more of our investments than me. ^_^

I've just bought some diesel £93  still I didn't have to queue for it
according to the car computer I now have 545 miles worth.

Fuel prices haven't gone up around here. They are the same as they were 2 years ago.
I still put £20.00s worth in just like I used to do.
The engine has some sort of problem though as I get far fewer miles from it than I used to

Anyway, I was badly injured yesterday. I thought it was fatal but my SAS training helped.
Carrying my washing through i deliberately let the door swing shut, thinking I will catch it with my arm.
Unfortunately my arm caught the handle. It peeled a triangular flap approx 20mm. It was sore.
