That takes me back . I did my apprenticeship back in the late 70s early 80s and spent nearly decade as a capstan lathe setter . I didn’t really want to leave but I had just got married and went to ask for raise of £10 a week ( they paid everyone differently so I knew I was being underpaid) , which they refused. So I went to work at Peugeot on the line in the Body in white , for £25 a week more plus a shift premium of 30% when on nights . That extra money was very useful with the big jumps in interest rates around that time.
Still have all my tools, verniers, gauges , conversion tables etc in a toolbox in the shed , but they havnt been used in anger since 1987/88. 🙂

I cycled up to the market, then i went and got a haircut i was flattered that they tried yet again to charge me full price instead of the senior citizen price.😁
Then as it was so hot i dived into the Mitre for an ale or two.
Just had a cuppa and a couple if slices of a Melton Mowbray pork pie.
A terrible diet day. 😋

In 1981 when I bought my first house, for a while the interest rate was 16.5%. I still have all the paperwork.
Fortunately both MrsP and myself had good jobs.

I too was buying my first house and the rates were at 15%
Later the overtime at work was stopped, so I had to take a second
job as a security guard, it was very easy work, that why I chose
it as after working 5 days as a Blacksmith didn't want anything to hard
and walking round the docks at night I came to enjoy it.

Should be 10⁰ cooler tomorrow.
Something light for tea this evening, stuffed red peppers with feta cheese on the top.

Just 24° here so quite pleasant.

Not having a lot of luck today, cleaned my strip light from under the kitchen cupboard
and now it won't work, I think the tube has gone.
Had early lunch to go out for a walk, just seen on my weather station it's 37.7c
so that's cancelled, may go later when it has cooled off a bit

Our kitchen wall units had a light fail....turned out it was a VERY specialised tube, & the german company no longer made it!
I got a bunch of cheap sensor lights - very small, but last many months - one in the coat cupboard, couple in each wall unit - work well. These onesfor
Does remind me I keep meaning to get a couple of bigger ones for our wardrobes. Useful when I have run out of Floordrobe space

I had a mortgage at that point - interest rate was consistently over 15%

which I just considered normal
