Back in the early 80s I worked with a guy who sailed at West Kirby. So, I guess his age would be mid to late 70s now.
His name was Peter**. Slim, may 5'9".
A bit pompous imo.
**I think his surname began with a 'W'......maybe Winstanley but can't remember.
Just wondered if it rang any bells.
No - not that I can remember but I mostly associated with people who sailed the boats similar to the one I sailed in - i.e. small dinghies
The people who sailed bigger boats - could sometime be a bit stuffy about it
sort of like the type that rides a carbon road bike who won;t talk to someone who rides a hybrid (or worse still - an ebike!!!)
Funny thing about sailing - it obviously attracts a certain type of person
Clubs like West Kirby mostly don;t attract the really rich set because the boats that can sail from there are all quite small
and you often get quite mucky just getting to your boat - that "sand" around the Wirral gets VERY sticky when you get out of the "nice bits"
and there was always the rumour that the word "sand" was doing more heavy lifting that the Water Companies wanted to admit!!!
So people who were overly found of their image tended to avoid the sailing - those that did sail and tried to be posh tended to lose their "poshness" when covered in "mud"
or when stuck in the boatyard trying to fix the engine or find out why the boat is leaking and getting covered in oil and "bilge water"
On a similar point - when I sailed at Hoylake the planners for the races were always on the lookout for days when the wind and tides were correct to get that bit further offshore.
The furthest turning point was a specific buoy marked "Sewer"
I was told NOT to fall overboard around there!!
