Rain all day today so I have a Fatbike ride planned for tomorrow when there should hopefully be a bit of squelchy goodness on the trails!

So todays enjoyable task is transcribing my reel-to-reel tapes of pirate radio stations to digital files - I am monitoring the audio which is great fun - currently listening to Mike Ahern on Radio Caroline 1966, the Melody Maker National Beat Contest is on at Brighton's Regent Ballroom, if anyones going could they pick me up a packet of 20 Players fags for three and six please!

I really enjoyed working, just not particularly for other people. I now work for myself but only 2 days a week. I only planned my retirement about a year before I finished.

I loved almost every day of my career. Called it a day at 48 & took my pension at 53.

Plenty of planning went into the decision to stop.

Plenty of planning went into the decision to stop.

I loved the bit where I got to hit villains with a stick.

I was one of only 3 in our farce authorised to continue using the PR24NX side handled baton. We'd switched to straight pegs (believe it or not because the side handled ones "looked too aggressive" FFS) and first time I used it was when I was on a covert op and a sheetbag pulled a knife on me. I stuck it round his skull with every ounce of energy I could muster and the bloody thing snapped leaving me holding just the stub, which wasn't a lot of use.

This happened to The Swede on the community team and Big Pat on firearms, both good friends of mine, both big fellers, so it was authorised for us to continue with the PR24, which was good. Smaller of less strong bobby's that weren't able to break them got to continue with the hopeless straight job. When you hit someone with the '24, they damn well stayed hit. they never came back for a second dose. Happy days.

We weren't allowed to hit around the head area unless it was absolute life or death. Had to go for the fleshy arms or legs.
