Pandemic cycling was all about leisure. Something fun to do during lockdown while the sun is shining.

Fuel prices/shortages would drive utility cycling which is way more difficult and requires secure places to lock bikes, carrying capacity, the need to ride in locations that aren't nice, the need to do it when the weather isn't ideal and so on. That's a much harder sell.

This is why I seldom cycle to work, cycling during the rush hour is unpleasant, and there's no safe, secure or dry place to park a bicycle when I get there.

Do they? Odd, I've never seen that.

The price is an exaggeration
but if you look at the Cycling press then the price of a very basic bike seems very high

But the average person thinking of starting doesn;t read the Cycling press - they are more likely to look in Halfords

As far as danger goes the press do make it look terribly dangerous

the only time it bike are mentioned is
a) someone was killed or close to it
b) someone ona "bike" has done something bad 9actually an electric motorbike normally)
or
c) someone is moaning about cyclits taking too much of the road etc etc and people are say they are all like (b) and/or should be banned

Anyone considering buying a bike will find that out in about 5 seconds.

Id hope so, but I often seem to spend much of my time when evangelising the benefits of cycling to colleagues at work making that very point, my last bike cost just under £500, theyre all convinced bikes cost more than £1000 and "proper bikes" cost thousands

Having gone to our local bike shop( Big Bear bikes) last week for a pop up charity cafe and had a wander around only to see a Trek bike on sale £12,000 they might not be that wrong.

Some years ago I was talking about this with the manager of the LBS

I had noticed that the bikes he had in his shop window (which is quite small) had changed from Raleigh to more expnsive brands
including ebikes but again, ones like my Raleigh Motus (and Array at the time) had disappeared and been replaced with Trek and anotehr brand

He said that initially Raleigh ebikes were great and he had sold a lot.
But after a while the market changed and he just could not sell them
people would come in and look
but then he would never see them again

He reckoned that came to look but then went to Halfords and didn't know enough to be able to see why they should pay more for something that seems the same

I can see the point - when I was looking I could have saved a bit by buying the Carrera equivalent

He still has the more expensive ones in his Window - he does sell Raleigh and the like but only by ordering them in if someone wants one

He reckons that he is best off talking to them and aiming to get them back to have it sorted out in a few years time if they buy it at Halfords

I was wandering through Mayfair the other day and I passed a Bentley dealership. So posh they don't even put prices on the cars. The fact that expensive cars exist doesn't mean much to the buyer of an ordinary car. Same for bikes. Yes, very expensive bikes exist. So what? All sorts of things are available in very expensive versions. If you shop around you can probably find a toaster costing many thousands.

You piqued my curiosity there

But the most expensive toaster I could find was £699 - a Smeg "Dolce & Gabbana" one.

An expensive bike, I suspect, would feel better whilst riding and certainly look better too, compared to a cheap ride, so you have a real difference in parity.

I fail to see what such an expensive toaster can offer. A cheap one toasts bread and an expensive one...errr...toasts bread!

For that price I'd want the damn thing to come with a masseuse who offered extras too!

Probably voice controlled and toasts to a certain colour

so the problem where you do 2 pieces and they are about right
then put another 2 in but they get done far darker because it just works on a timer and ignores whether or not the elements are already hot
is overcome

And, of course, you can switch it on by a voice command from your phone

always wonder about things like that - you have to put the bread in - and you have to take it out a minute later so being able to start it from Australia is of limited use as far as I can see
but apparently that's just me

I suspect that 99.99% of the population has never considered nor will ever consider riding a bike on the streets. We are a niche activity and we should understand and accept that we will never be on any government's list for any kind of cycling provision specific to us on the transportation network. If any happens, great, but even then it will not please everyone - and not even every cyclist.
