I wish they could get rid of the regions altogether and just have a strong club structure. I think fans might take more interest in the local club with a sense of identity.

Unfortunately I don’t think it will work in the professional game unless the elite players can earn the big bucks maybe from a central contract which provides the elite status for the capped players.

they ought to break away and join the RFL instead

They had all that in place and pissed all over it, shafting the clubs and the fans by going down the region route. The biggest mistake they made.

Not a bad view at the Stadium of Light yesterday.

England will need to be a lot less predictable if they want to win the tournament.

Good start to the tournament. I had expected a much closer match with host nerves impacting England and a fired up USA. Good to see an English side of either gender come out after half time and really push on rather than defend a lead.

Agreed. I wouldn't have fancied being in there at half time. They must have got a proper roasting.

Kildunne is next level and Botterman is an absolute destroyer.

Yes John Mitchell comes across as proper old school. The sort of guy you’d follow anywhere but wouldn’t want to cross.

Just turned the rugby on. Not sure what’s more embarrassing, the complete mismatch of a game or two commentators using the phrase “an eight month year old baby”.

Samoa are an amateur side who had to crowdfund to be there.

What are they meant to do? Not play and never get anywhere? If you look at the second tier teams they're much more evenly contested.

I remember 20 odd years ago when Japan and Argentina (men) were absolutely shocking, but they stuck with it and they're fairly decent these days.

Couple of belting games over the weekend with South Africa beating Italy for the first time ever and the USA drawing with Australia, which opens up that group.

As with most tournaments the big guns usually get through, and though their advantages are more pronounced here it's not really all that different.

I don't disagree with that, a part of growing the sport is that teams will take regular thrashings. Wales have been more embarassing, they're supposedly professional these days (and let's face it the men are just as bad!). It was two different commentators twice using the phrase '8 month year old baby' in the space of a few minutes that got me. Samoa had a decent patch just before and after half time when they probably should have scored a couple of tries and where they held England out which ultimately kept the score below 100.
