Yeah - it was the first time I heard of it. It put the road in my head as a cycling challenge. But how do you tell the wife you want to cycle the death road?

Really? Didn't know that. But in all seriousness, I have ended up on motorways, but not by choice. Twice in Italy, once in France. In Italy there was a road that turned into a motorway without warning (ie, marked as a normal road on the map but became a motorway unexpectedly) and the other occasion was in Sicily. The road I was supposed to take was totally flooded and unpassable. A kind police officer actually told me to take the motorway round! Once, in Greece, a guy told me the motorway was the only way to where I wanted to go. I opted to take the train to avoid that stretch. You see, I don't actually seek to ride on motorways, it's just that sometimes (when touring abroad especially) they seem to seek me!

Blackwall Tunnel southbound in rush hour 18 years ago. Utterly illegal and quite terrifying.
