Archie would be tempted to point out that a lot of Georgian houses were built to fall down, and would have done so years since had they not been re-built, tied back and propped up.
built-in obsolescence or just not built that well?

Had that style of roof on our house in London - it was a complete swine to get watertight.

built with two sizes of brick, the outer leaf tied in to the inner leaf every four or five courses. And with big window openings. And wildly understrength timbers. So - the latter.

Ridge on the party wall and a central valley for each property coupled with a parapet to the front, everything's been done to ensure as much water as possible doesn't get away - probably 4" x 2" rafters rotted to buggery.

I've got to veto this. If it wasn't for Will the Bard, we would never have had the Reduced Shakespeare Company.

They'd have found something else to do.

I liked Hardy and The Mayor of Casterbridge, which I studied at A-level.

I disliked immensely George Eliot and Middlemarch, also 'studied' (I never got past the first page) at A-level.

Guess which appeared in the A-level exam!

Never liked John Irving (what's with the bears?), although I did try.
John Betjeman - nope.
Joseph Conrad - far too much trivial detail.

Bit like 1970's houses? Other than the fact whose gonna rebuild, tie back or prop up a 1970's house?
