Jahre Viking. Largest man made self propelled thing ever. Theres a link to a birds eye view of it being broken up here, which gives some scale to how big it was in comparison to other ships, bearing in mind it's already partly gone in the photo.
There is sort of a practical limit on tankers with the length, an extra 100,000 tonnes may not mean much longer but wider and a deeper draught.

As a child I remember sailing from Preston to Larne each year on the Bardic Ferry.

This was a cargo ship that carried also a small number of passengers and was one of the very first "roll on roll off" ships. You just don't get the same atmosphere on modern day ferries.
