The Union Flag was altered when Ireland officially joined the Union, but not when most of it left. However I'd very much like to see a new flag if Scotland leaves, nothing wrong with a composite of the Flag of St George, a Welsh symbol and a Northern Irish symbol. However I'd guess that there will be no change, as I don't think the Scots will leave, however much that may benefit my part of England, that at the moment hardly appears on the Whitehall/Westminster radar.

If Scotland becomes independent then Rump of UK (RUK) can decide for itself about its flag and sing what it likes at sports matches.

I'm always interested in claims of subsidies. If Scotland was independent Scots wouldn't have subsidised the Olympics or pay for HS2.

Don't forget Chris Hoy...honorary Englishman - the first since 'Oor Wheelie' of the Sunday Post.

The Scotch would have paid their cut of HS2 when the guesstimate was only a few quid (£32 billion) then..? Not the £70 billion forecast...'tightwads' someone called them. How their wads can be tight in kilts is beyond me.

Music: What's the flower of Scotland? I thought it is a weed not a flower.

Devolution is for nobbers.

PS Noodley, could you send me down a refund from the University of West Lothian at the earliest opportunity, ta? I'll swap them for a few cans of tartan and a diet Mars bar.

As I understand it the term Great Britain is a geographical term and refers to the whole of the biggest of the British isles thus the UK being Great Britain and Northern Ireland with the Great Britain part being made up of England Wales and Scotland. So if Scotland goes then so must the term Great Britain.
I think we could still be a United Kingdom of the remaining parts but team GB and the GB designation on car numbers would need to be re-done.

Anything to do with the Irish and flags - Best left alone!

Can't we just nick the Basque flag, and claim it was ours all along?

i was going to post this! this flag was based on the union flag as the Basque region had strong ties with the UK during the industrial revolution.

I don't think we want to p*** the Basques off. They are not known for being able to hold their tempers in check particularly when it comes to anything to do with their nation.

the basques are well known for fighting, BUT, they have never been interested in expanding their region, only defending it. i can hightly recommend "a basque history of the world" as a great read. i want to apply for Euskadi citizenship, but the language is a problem, i only know half a dozen words.

salmond has already said he intends to keep the monarchy
That's good of him... what a magnanamous gesture: King Alex I.
So Scotland to be ruled by the new king and his SNP advisors- the first thing will be to ban political parties and public meetings.

Why must the term 'Great Britain' dissappear if Scotland splits off? AS you said it is a Geographical term. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland would be just that. All it would mean is the Northern portion of Great Britain is not part of the United Kingdom.

I'm sure Alec Salmond will still find reasons to scape goat Westminster for all his political failings whether they are devolved or not.

Cos they are only a Principality rather than a country.
wrong wrong wrong .

"The United Kingdom consists of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom
Souce: The official site of the Prime Minister's Office

So there you have it. Wales is a country.

and we don't really care about the welsh national flag on the UK flag, as we are concerned with more important things.

rugby, singing and sheep ;) and not neccesarily in that order. the further south and west you go the closer Sheep gets to the top of the list ;)
