The Worst Sound a Cyclist can hear!

On the commute home tonight heard a the grinding of tyres on tarmac about 20-30 feet behind me (i.e car locking up under sudden braking). Put in a little brown vapour trail spurt and managed to get out of the way. Uttered a load of obscenities at the driver and then set a delayed adrenalin record time home to a change of undies.

Fortunately both bike and I are unscathed. By luck rather then skill on my part. Why do drivers drive like that?!?

When I'm slowing at a red or a mature amber and the vehiclod behind suddenly slams on the accelerator, I know that it's a complete idiot and I pray they're only jumping a red and not driving into me.

If I get to an amber and the car behind is reasonably close I always floor it, give a good look both ways and hope nobody is coming across on red. That would be unlucky and rare, but I'd rather do that than get pillowed from behind.

This was up a country lane. Guessing he was attempting to overtake and didn't realise check to see if there was a car coming in the other direction.
