The Worst Sound a Cyclist can hear!

The worst sound for me, is the sound of something coming up very fast behind and making no hint that they are slowing down; its usually a motorbike, a train or a car on the motorway I just going/ went over

A.B.S on all modern vehicles should prevent tyre screetch.
If you hear it you can bet either a brake caliper is seizing and unable to respond quickly to the effects
of modulated brake fluid pressure ... or there's a fault with the inner core of a flexible brake line.

I dont mean brake screech just the sound of them easing up switching path (change in engine noise) rather than continuing to accelerate directly at me; I really should be more aware but it has caught me out a few times

That "magic roundabout" one - you can see that his door pillar is obscuring you from his view (not that that is any excuse, of course, he should move his head an look round it).

In my experience ABS technolgy is being constantly thwarted nowadays by pot hole filled roads and peoples tendancy to buy "budget" tyres.

In the case the other night one side of the road tends to be covered in loose debris as there's steep banking either side and any rain just washes it off the fields/ground.

I had exactly this on my commute this morning. Approaching a blind left hand bend I could predict exactly what was going to happen just from the sounds from the approaching vehicle.
White van approaching at speed, decides he doesn't need to slow and overtakes close as we're both entering the bend.
He then cuts right across me as the road straightens out, inches from me... I doubt he heard the string of expletives as he sped off. He probably managed to save himself less than 10 seconds, yet if something had been coming the other way he'd have either had a nasty smash, I'd be squashed flat, or probably both.
Absolute cockwomble.

The worst sound?.

Local bike shop: "..bottom bracket gone, cassette needs replacing...etc. That'll be £ (insert large number) mate". I swear I heard my credit card sigh:blush:

I had this on my first commute home! I went round a blind corner in a 40mph zone, the car behind me was hanging back waiting for a space to over take. Then someone come round the corner at 40mph and locked up nearly hitting the car behind me!!!

The sound of your Garmin going into autostop mode when you're cycling up a hill...

The club were seriously p***ed with me going up Hope Mountain on Sunday to the delightful sound of constantly start-stopping Garmin for the best part of 10 minutes!

In my defence I hadn't ridden for a month, and I had a virus... I'm usually faster, honest :P

It's happened to me, too. I was riding up Mt Baw Baw, a mountain east of Melbourne. In my defence, it's a hors categorie bike climb, and really pushes you to the limit .
