Where did he source the cyanide? Is it still available? Me and @classic33 would like to know.

I would assume that such poisons require a licence to use and the source is highly controlled. One can't just purchase over the counter at the chemist's and sign the poisons book any more I'm afraid.

I might be wrong here, but I thought the poison used with worms by pest-controllers was strychnine? Only because one of my dogs nearly died of strychnine poisoning once and there had to be a Ministry enquiry (which could not determine who was responsible, since a random bird could eat a toxic worm and die, and that dog would eat anything she came across).

Oh sorry. I don't know - this was twenty five years ago and he was a professional rat catcher long dead himself but I imagine he got it from a pharmacy under license, imagine cyanide in the hands of the grim reaper

Nope and nope. Both are relatively easy to get hold of and don'r require any special licensing to possess or use.

Had similar issue last year. Got the Council's guy round who determined ratty was nesting under next door's shed. Poisoned bait along his/her runs solved the problem but we found one evident rat = 6 corpses across two gardens.

I agree with getting rid of the rat, but I think the Police might be rather unsympathetic if you start shooting beggars
