My dad got a reputation for closing churches wherever he went; he worked for the methodist church, so he was often dealing with a congregation of six people in a big leaky building in an area of rural depopulation.

We'd short of one church for every five pubs in the town centre*. We had thirty churches at one time.

In the case of the Church of England they're one of the biggest land owners in the country. They don't need the revenue from the congregation.

there is a tool you can buy that trims the ends off. never used them and not sure how effective they are, but maybe worth a try!
