Do you remember what his "System" was called? Radio Luxembourg was on AM, I think, and it was always fading in and out in a fog of heterodyne whistle. That's spelt - 'K-E-Y-N-S-H-A-M'.

No sawn off bit from the end of one of the candles your mum kept in case of power cuts (in your case, an altar candle perhaps...)? Nah, doesn't count...I made one of them a few years ago, but it was a bit bigger. If I could remember my Flickr login, I'd attach a picture, but you'll have to make do with following this link.
Talking about gunpowder has just reminded me of Lott's chemistry sets. These came in different sizes, and contained something called logwood chips in a little jar. I have absolutely no idea what they were for. A friend who lived a few doors away had a chemistry set he'd owned for a couple of years. The instruction book contained the formula for gunpowder. When I got my set, I noticed that this particular formula had been redacted, as we would say nowadays. The start of health and safety nonsense, no doubt. Later, I discovered that it was possible to make an explosive with weed killer and sugar, although I believe they eventually put something in the weedkiller to retard the reaction.
