Seems like there are a lot of people around that are either
a) very very good at lying and insisting that they totally believe in "the cause" as they have something to gain in some way
b) believe in "the cause" totally and any facts and logic that say that it is not true are ignored
The above could equally apply to a political cause
and a some versions of religion
which category some people come into is often difficult to determine
although it sometimes become clear shortly after they leave (looks at today's news meaningfully)
