Things you've forgotten to take on a ride

A friend was due at mine at 5am for a train to Winchester to have a crack at the South Downs Way. We were catching a train at Wimbledon (about 10 minutes away) at 05.40. He arrived at 5.30. The reason ? He'd left home in Berkhamstead in good time with everything he needed in the car, but the bike. He'd gone about ten miles before he realised.

And ... Did you get the train?

We did. Just made it onto the platform as the train was pulling in. It was probably the fastest flat two miles I have ever done on that bike.

Once rode 15 miles to my nearest 1/2 decent bike shop to get some new grips, and realised I had no wallet once I got there.

Often forget my water bottles. Filled, they add 2KG to my bike so I carry them down the stairs separately and often leave them there. Once forgot my helmet and I always forget money when I ride with somebody and we intend to stop at a cafe (I am so used to riding alone, and I never stop alone).

oo, the gloves thing. Still remember the exquisite pain from doing that nearly 35 years ago. 10 mile February commute - couple of 100 yards, bugger forgot my gloves. Oh well, can't be arsed going back now. A mile or two later, Christ on a bike, this is painfull but far too far to go back now. A mile or two later the pain subsided - ah, got used to it; just needed to man TF ip. Got to the office and 10 minutes later my hands warmed up. Half an hour of sheer agony - could not believe how much my hands hurt. Not a mistake I've repeated.

Had similar pain on a winter motorcycle ride from Torridon to London despite the best gloves I could find. Was riding on snow at 30mph all the way to Glasgow, then merely sleet down to London. Despite being on promise I had to stop at every services to warm my hands on the hand dryer.

Do you really carry two litres of water with you or do you fill them with something else?

In summer yes, I have 2 x 1L SIS bottles. On a 100K ride I'll be all out at the end, as I tend not to stop anywhere and top up.

Had to ride my bike around the Paignton VeloPark in flipflops as I was selling another to a friend who hadn't brought his shoes.... I had to lend him mine so he could try the bike.... must have looked like a right pair of amateurs... me in flip flops and him looking like Coco-the-Clown !

I met a guy by the roadside last year on a mountain bike, with a puncture. He had remembered to bring his toolkit. Unfortunately he'd forgotten which bike he was on and had brought his road bike toolkit with the wrong inner tubes.

He was on the verge of calling out his wife. I gave him a packet of patches. I also offered him a 28mm presta inner tube which I bet would have got him home, as inners are very stretchy, but he was doubtful. He thanked me but I bet he called his wife anyway once I was out of sight.

I also offered him a crap freebie tyre lever from a magazine cover that is guaranteed to snap but for some reason he didn't want that either.
