I started cycling a year ago more or less to the day.
When I started I thought I knew exactly what type of cycling I wanted to do, or should I say with hindsight what I thought I did not want to do. This led me to join the CTC.
All was going swimmingly I saved up and bought a bike cash (means C2W is still available!) Specialised Secteur Sport as this would fit with the type of riding I was doing slow, steady and long rides
My goal was set build up the miles and crack the century
Having bought the new bike and wanting to go a bit faster I thought I would seek out a couple of clubs and try them out just so that I could quicken up my pace a bit.
Now I am in a bit of bother
Having experienced a club ride sitting in a group and going along at 20+mph with others then seeing another group (from the same club) on the road you are about to turn into and having the leaders of my group accelerate away to get on the back for me was absolutely thrilling albeit absolutely exhausting I did haul myself to the back of the leading group but in the end I was spat out the back along with another guy with about 400 metres to the finish. The other guys carried on for another lap !!!!!
I was spent after 2 laps of the training loop approx 16 miles but had a far, far bigger grin on my face than any CTC ride I have ever participated in and a far bigger average speed !!
I have recently been loogging my commute averages (my commutes are actually the only way I can fit in any training) and I managed 19 mph avg over 7 miles I want to get this over 21 for 7 but I am not quite sure why? I am getting so obsessed about averages and improving short distance speed when my original goal is or rather was to crack the century???
Have I just gone over to the dark side of TT’s and Road racing ???
Have I just answered my own question?
