Thinking of buying a GPS ??

I bought a Garmin Dakota 20. The trouble is like all other Garmin devices it comes with a base map which is next to useless. Although you are able to download openstreet maps, I have not been able to do that. The files downloaded is always corrupted and has no use. Therefore I have just ordered navigator maps for about £20 and it should be with me next week.

Just got a Garmin Edge 200 and I really like it

As my rides got longer the Strava app on my iPhone was eating the battery power so I needed an alternative

Had my first ride yesterday with it, took around 30 seconds to get its first gps signal them worked faultlessly throughout my ride. I got home and plugged it into the iMac and it uploaded the ride in a couple of seconds to Strava. Lots of nice stats for boring people with!!

I bought a 'in front' mount off amazon for £11 and used the cycle club discount and gift vouchers to get the unit for around £72

Hmmm. I use these - http://www.osmmaps.com/ and have never had a problem. Plus as OSM is still evolving, they are updated weekly.

As for GPS, an etrex 20 (plus maps for the above link) probably offers the best package for the money.

And if you want actual maps, 800 is still superior to the 810 imo

What makes you say that ? I own a 510 but am thinking of upgrading to the 810 for the mapping as I'm riding further afield than I used to.

Garmin have a habit of releasing unfinished products and allowing the first swarm of customers to beta test for them. They then take months(if at all) to fix well known and documented issues. Simply put, my experience with the 800 has been much more pleasurable than using the '10 series. Being the club geek I get all sorts of devices to play with, I was mostly glad to be handing '10 series units back to their owners

Microsoft have been releasing unfinished products for thirty years, hasn't stopped them lol.

The 510 has it's software issues admittedly, but the last two updates have helped a lot

I'm on my second Etrex; a 20 which replaced an HCx, and I own a Forerunner. They all work perfectly.

If you go the external battery one option is the “Topeak Battery Pack”. At £55 it’s about twice the price of a cheapo battery off Amazon but it’s a neater stem mounted solution.

At 5200 mAh it should charge an iPhone three plus times. If the phone is already charged then that’s 4 phone cycles so if you getting 4 hours that would take you up to 16 hours.
I’ve been using the Topeak for a month and it’s being working well.

+1 for the Etrex. Easily swapped out batteries if you need to. Use mine all the time and it got me through London - Edinburgh - London ok apart from a bit of user stupidity.
