Depends. If you call plod from the scene and they have someone to come out there and then, leave it in situ and wait with it until they arrive to prevent anyone else coming a cropper.
If they don't have anyone to come out immediately, take it down. Not worth the risk for the next person along there.

Maybe he hasn't reported it to the Police because as one of the comments says - the wire is between two fence posts (you can see that in the pics), and the lower lengths of wire have been removed by vandals/trespassers.

Many years ago i saw a cyclist giving a lad a good slap as i passed by. I thought about intervening but the cyclist after doing the deed caught me up on a hill. Naturally i feared for my safety so i thought i'd humour him and ask what he did that for? He told me that the lad had thrown a broom handle at his front wheel trying to get the stick between his spokes to bring him off his bike.He said he was doing about 25 mph and if the bike had stopped suddenly he'd have been badly injured,so he went back and caught the git to teach him a lesson. I think he did the right thing!

You mark it with cloth or anything very visible call the police and tell them you won't remove it, so someone else will be injured if they don't. Only way to get them to investigate. There is no excuse for not reporting it, specially as he claims to be a volunteer for mountain rescue.

It seems this is happening everywhere. In reference to Force 10 from Navarone, that's why jeeps, etc in WWII had a metal stake welded to their front with a cutting edge. May become a necessary MTB accessory.

If I ran across this, I'd flag it, report it from scene, and hope the legal system gave the perpetrator a charge of attempted murder for each person who came down that trail on a MTB.

I Doubt a horse could go down that track and I doubt even more that it would do it any harm. It would simply walk into it and stop IF it didn't see it first. So. Assuming the rider and horse weren't blind that's is not going to happen. The same applies to any cyclist going uphill "I’ve looked up and that’s when it caught me".
I am assuming the wire was attached both sides and not just a broken wire on one side then there is a significant risk to a downhill rider if they weren't looking.

On other mtb forums there's a lot of talk of this being the work of the land owner??
Who ever did this wants the wire shoving up their arse..
