. Used to live there for a year while I worked at Harwell. Probably why I don't need hi-viz clothing, my natural glow does that for me now.

I actually don't know anyone obsessed with class!I was brought up in Australia, which has no class at all. I simply don't understand the British obsession with class, and looking for nuances in class (I'm a better sort of middle class than him because of X, Y or Z) just seems ridiculous to me. As of course does pride in one's class. "Working class and proud of it" just seems gormless to me.
Anyway, wasn't this thread about a social bike ride?

I used to think 'what show offs' when seeing people in lycra on bikes. Now I know it's because it so comfortable!Looks fun although all the lycra and lids would put me off.. If there's similar for old duffers in jeans I'd be up for it
I wear lycra longs in the winter but from March through to about November I'm in lycra undershorts with baggies and a t shirt

When I took up cycling again I was advised by a mate who did a lot of cycling to wear lycra bib shorts, they were padded and had no waist band to pinch irritate on long rides. I bought some and looked stupid in them, the first time I wore them I strode around the room, clapping my hands above my head shouting "Easy! Easy!".

I see what you mean and I certainly wasn't having a pop at the OP - I'm sure the ride was brilliant. My first impression from the pic though was that it looked more like a sporting event than a convivial jaunt. I don't know about you but I gladly gave up sport when I left school about 300 years ago, and part of what I love about cycling is that I can do it in 'normal' clothes if I choose. I wonder whether more folks would take up cycling if it was seen as more of an everyday thing, with no need of special kit like in parts of Europe. I'm not explaining myself well at all here, so better leave it there!
