Maybe it's lucky the motorist in question was also a cyclist and therefore was probably looking for cyclists. Sadly a lot aren't and a worrying percentage don't even seem to bother looking out for anything unless it's their phone, sat-nav or the road six feet in front of their car.
I'm not particularly bothered about clothing colour, although most of my stuff is bright coloured anyway due to preference, I'm not cool enough for the stealth all-black look, but I always have lights on front & rear, the same in the car, lights always on. We need to give ourselves the maximum chance against the myopic or distracted d*ckheads out there.

I do the same as you with lights.

On my way to ALDI this morning in my automobile to pick up a centre aisle special I came up to traffic lights behind a roadie in the mandatory black strip but with the brightest red light that I have ever seen. Steady, not flashing unless it reverts to flashing when the bike is moving. Extremely visible!

Bloody cyclists and their overly bright lights...no wonder everyone hates them...oh, wait a minute..

It's the job of all of us as road users to be diligent for others whether they be wearing a gimp suit, sequined ball gown, or a 1.5 ton steel exoskeleton.

I know a chap who occasionally goes cycling, through one of the posher parts of town enroute to the local.... ahem... woods... wearing a gimp suit complete with mouth ball - worn on his forhead - i assume only when cycling, on the bike (the one with wheels).
He has attracted the attention of the local constabulary on a few occasions.

Anyway

I am in the dont wear black, wear something more conspicuous.

..if perhaps not a gimp suit for me.

Though gimp suit man has never, to my knowledge been run over!

When drivers wear fireproof suits, helmets and have day-glo coloured cars so they can be seen I'll dress up like a Christmas tree to go on my bike. Everyone on the road has a responsibility to look out for other road users. The fact that pedestrians, cyclists, drivers don't all behave is laziness, stupidity and carelessness.

I wish I hadn't mentioned the clothing now, the issue was cycling on the wrong side of the road.
Hey ho...

I do that all the time, at least according to my friends from the UK.

Japan is one place where cycling against traffic is endemic in the cities, where there is a very high rate of cycling. It's very odd: I asked why and was told "People feel safer when they can see cars coming". This was a few years ago now when front lights were mandatory but not rear lights, so there could have been some logic to it.
