"... travel far, not fast", Ted Simon
Yep, done the deed.
Just got back from a damp motorbike trip, returning from Somerset.
Here's Thorn's pdf Sherpa brochure if you're interested http://www.sjscycles.com/thornpdf/ThornSherpaBroLoRes.pdf
Initially I was attracted to Thorn's Nomad and many thanks to @SatNavSaysStraightOn on here for letting me try her OH's bike earlier this week (she has one too).
It's become apparent though that this model is overkill for my requirements. I want a bike that'll cope, fully laden with camping gear, with UK cycle trails including off road stuff. Thorn made it clear to me that the Nomad's for longer expeditions overseas. Who was I too argue? Leaving off Rohloff gears has saved me almost £1000. I can see how good they are, but I've got no axe to grind as far as derailleurs are concerned, so I reckon I'm getting the right bike for me.
Chose a couple of fancy options, including a dyno hub, but more of that when the machine arrives.
Now, I'm just very excited and waiting for an expected pick up at the beginning of next month.
What a lucky boy!
BTW It's red, like my motorbike cos, as all bikers (engined and otherwise) know, "... the red ones are the fastest".
Roll on November

Super Jealous! I would have chosen red to  I would have skipped the Rohloff gears also. Not a day goes by were I don't think ''What should I buy, Dawes Galaxy, Thorn Raven or Surely LHT''. I'm not in a position to test ride any of them either

Hope to see pictures of it once you receive it & to see what other options you went with. I'm gonna bookmark the link, the Sherpa sits better in my price range.

As a Nomad owner with 25K miles on the clock, you have made a good decision for what you need, being a bit of a belt and braces man, I went for the original version of the Nomad many years ago and not regretted it, it's built like a tank and goes on when other fail, Ok so it probably weighs 1KG more than a similar tourer today, but I can make that up by loosing a litre of water

I've got an old Thorn eXp with well over 80,000 miles on it. It's showing its age, but I'd never part with it. It still carries me and my camera gear around Sussex nearly every morning, another 30 miles today, reliable as the tides.

I think you may have missed a zero out on that weight!
@User14044 your's is black.... what was wrong with yellow?
@Geoff Crowther I suspected the Nomad was overkill for what you wanted... hence why seeing one and using it was useful in that sense. Glad you went with the Sherpa (I rather fancy one myself, mind you I rather like their Audax bike as well... I just don't know where I would store them all... (or how I would pay for them...))
