Those huge wall maps in Evans Cycles stores - where from?

Yesterday we were admiring the massive OS wall map in an Evans store. It was a selective reprint of the area between Manchester and the South Lakes, going as far east as the Dales, taken from the OS 1:50,000 Landranger maps but enlarged for printing so that all the names etc. were readable from a good distance away. The bolder features, thicker lines and stronger colours of the 1:50,000 Landranger actually gave a better idea of the topography of the country than you would get with the fainter colours and finer detail of a 1:25,000 Explorer at normal size.

The shop assistant said that lots of customers ask who prints the map but that Evans Marketing department won't reveal the name. Does anybody have any ideas, before I start making phone calls? We would like one for our landing wall.

Edit: I should have searched first! Just found this: http://www.wallpapered.com/custom-map-wallpaper?gclid=CL3Os--Xi8sCFYIK0wod_CkHUQ

Yes, OS will print you a customised map of a certain area but I don't think they will enlarge a map for printing like those that PR and I found on the web.

There's an art - and increasingly a computer science - to enlarging maps.

A simple enlargement will produce place names and text which look stupidly large, so you need to enlarge the base map by one factor and enlarge the lettering by a lesser factor.

Looks like the map in Evans has been done properly, I'm keen to see if my local branch has one.

One ambition I would love to fulfil is to get every Explorer map of the UK and stick them all onto the floor of a big warehouse then walk around Britain for a while.

Not quite as impressive, but not requiring a big warehouse for viewing - GB OS Explorer download - only £144 to you, sir!

PS You can print out whatever parts of the map you want to, so you could tile your printouts to cover any desired area.

That was London when I lived there in 1982. I wish I'd bought that house in Walthamstow......

There was (is?) a pub/restaurant in Connel that had maps of Scotland on the ceiling (can't remember if they were marine charts or OS maps though). That got me a crick in the neck!

Good thread - I've been wanting a large map for a wall...

A friend of mine used to have part-ownership of a floor of the Metropolitan Wharf building in Wapping in the late 70s/early 80s. It was pretty tatty then, but just look at it now! I bet he didn't get much for his share when he sold it. It might be a touchy topic, but I will try to find out next time I speak to him.
