Thanks @lejogger. It wasn't obvious it was the code in the post (which for some reason is post #62 when I view the thread), which is why I missed it originally. Anyway, I've now joined British Cycling so have a 10% discount at Halfords (plus many other member benefits)!
For anyone interested, the code is TForL12, which gives you £10.67 off the standard £24 price. If you pay by direct debit, you get an additional 10% off, which brings it down to £12. I also used TopCashBack, so may get an additional £10.10 cash back, which would mean it only cost me £1.90! (I could also have used Quidco for £10 cash back.)

To qualify some of accountant petes observations, I'll say the following ( assuming he agrees) .. FSA crAnksets are far from the best IMHO. The paint on my megaexo cranks rubs off easily and the logo diss appeared even quicker. Perhaps that was the way I'd got my cleats set up, but had no similar problems on other cranks with the same shoes. Also, mega exo BBs are poor, little protection from the elements .
Now TBF, this doesn't mean they'll fall apart in months , but there are defiantly better crAnksets out there . It's. Just personal preference.
The calipers won't be the best either but at the end of the day, all entry level bikes have a compromise of components on them. If you want better components, you pay, then it's not an entry level bike anymore and people will say it's too expensive to get into the sport so's to speak .

just to qualify some of gbb's observations...
I've had a Gossamer crankset knocking about on various bikes for 3-4 years now. It's been on my best bike, then did two winters on my winter bike and is now fitted to my cross bike. Some of the markings on it have worn away, but so what. I've also been through 3-4 BBs with it, which is understandable, given the mileage and use I have put it to. The FSA external BBs are, in my experience, no worse than any other type out there, although I now use a Sora BB with it, because I can get them cheaper.

It could have been sales patter, but a mate of mine in a lower mileage than me has went through a couple of FSA cranksets and the last time he took it to a shop, the mechanic said FSA were known for this. I did point out though I had FSA cranks and never had a problem in 9,000 (all weather) miles; its done another 5000 miles since before I replaced the BB and its still going strong at 16,500miles.

I picked up my new Boardman Road Comp this morning. Given the Halfords discounts, plus the 10% off via British Cycling membership, I only paid £531 for it; not bad given it's now back up to the full price of 799.99! If I get Quidco in-store cash back (although I don't expect I will given it was reserved online to get the £40 discount from Halfords), the net cost will come down to just over £507. Needless to say, I'm very happy! 
I've only had a quick ride "around the block" to check things over, but it's already clear that it's a significant step up from my Carrera Virtuoso. Looking forward to a proper ride tomorrow morning.
