Job dillema,if you had the choice between a new direction that would pay reasonably well with no commute but sporadically ie 0 hour contract, or return to a previous existance that would pay better but commit to a 50hr week +15mile commute. Money for survival not an issue, but luxuries is. Which would you choose? Spare time or money to spend?

Option 1 for me. Time over money anyday for me. (I would worry over the contract though)
If I were to go for option 2 I'm a bit torn - if the 15 mile commute is by bike I'd be up for it, but I'm less sure about the 50 hr week though!

My first thought is lucky you to have two such options. Like others, my gut preference would be for time rather than (luxuries) money. The only thing that would give me pause is the insecurity of the 0 hours option. But if you're confident of enough hours to pay the bills (and afford the occasional luxury) then yes, definitely option 1.

Would option one also have you on call?
If so, option two with no hesitation. I've done split shifts, totalling forty hours(250 miles cycling), upto 99 hour weeks and half an hour either way.

"Given the option" of a zero hour contract, but that put me on call, unpaid.

50 hours a week with up to an hours commute each way versus potentially zero hours... I would look at finding a plan C, especially if (like mentioned above) you are on call with plan A..

Interesting. I admit I fancy plan a. Dilemma is compounded by being offered plan b whilst still awaiting interview for plan a (which does involve some non retainer on call work.)
