When I were a lad, I used to count 1 hippopotamus 2 hippoptamus etc. but I always thought it was a bit more then a second.

When I did my first (and last) parachute jump (static line 2,500 feet) we jumped and were told to count 1 thousand 2 thousand etc to 4 and check canopy.

No parachutes now, but that's how I count in seconds If I'm trying to be precise (for measuring important things like the distance of thunderstorms)!

I use "ands".

One and = one second.

Me too. When it gets to thirteen, I use the 'teen bit instead of and - thir-teen, four-teen, etc and so on up through 20s, 30s etc.

There are a few traffic lights where I know the timing, and count so as to give me a good start away on the change.
