Through axle - new type to me

My next door neighbour called round asking if I could help take the front wheel off her bike. She has a puncture and wants to take it to Halfords. I will offer to repair it for her but haven't yet............as I can't get the wheel out.

It's a through axle fitting I haven't encountered before. Obviously there's a quick release handle. If I release the handle I can then loosen the opposite side but that's all. The axle won't disengage or allow me to pull it out.

Help would be gratefully received......and save my blushes! 🤣

What happens if you hold the other side still, and attempt to unscrew the 'QR' side?
Or vice versa.

The Brompton G3 range has a similar setup on the front wheel.
No idea why, maybe techno for the sake of it - ? :whistle:

I had one of those @&$%!§! things come through our shop once. It had corroded inside so as soon as we tried to open it all the little internal parts dissolved and the friggin thing landed on the floor as so much high tech schrapnel.

another case of over complicated design defeating good sense.

as I remember the rebuild kit cost a tidy sum as well.

run away… run away screaming like a little girl… do it! DO IT NOW!

@PapaZita - thanks but I gave up. Life's too short! 🤣

@fritz katzenjammer - as soon as I realised something that should be very simple wasn't working I stopped. No force should be needed and I could tell where it was going.

My thru axle uses a 6mm Allen key, carrying one of those around is enough hassle in itself.
