Tissington Trail Question

In a months time I will be in Ashbourne for a long weekend with cycling friends. None of us is local. I was wondering if the Tissington Trail was an option on a road bike? Any other riding suggestions would be gratefully received also.

Already on it. Looks a bit like gravel bike territory to me but it doesnt look impossible. Hoping to get some kind of confirmation from someone local or has done it on a road bike

I was there a while back for a weekend so info on here and the thread in general and a couple of routes to steal if you want.

On 28 mm touring type tyres you'd be OK on the Tissington

the high peak trail was slightly chunkier gravel in place so doable but more comfortable on a gravel bike CX bike 32/35mm stuff.

The Manifold Track is tarmac so not an issue.

Tissington trail is fine on any road bike. I've done it several times. As per comment above, some parts of the high peak trail are a bit rougher.

If trails are your thing, the Monsal is best of all and also fine on a road bike.

The Manifold trail is also very good and fine in road bike.

If you want to go a bit further, you can go up the Tissington, down the High Peak, around Carsington water & back up to the Tissington it's about 35 miles from Ashbourne all doable on road bikes as long as comfort is not primary concern. Several Cafe's all the way around.

that's one of the route linked on my 1st link .

I actually wouldn't bother going round the back of Carsington, we found there were too many walkers and blind corners so a bit of a stop-go faff. If doing again, I would pick up the back road after lunching at the excellent Milners arms, and either pick up the cycle path around nearside of Carsington or the B5035 up to Brackendale Lane

Except, don't cross the ford at the end of Manifold Trail (Matlock side) on a road bike. You will get wet, very wet. Oh how we laughed, and so did the picnicers when two mates fell off !

Are you confusing your trails - pretty sure I rode the full length of the Manifold without seeing a ford or Matlock?

I still reckon the Manifold doesn't have a Matlock end. See exhibit A below

Maybe the High Peak Trail, that runs over that way, but I cut off down to Carsington well before that.

or there is this one on none of the trails but quite close to Tissington village, we took the footbridge as would any sane cyclist

I've ridden it many times. Several on a Brompton. Decent surfaced but the wider the tyre the more comfortable I've found it.

Last year, I saw two blokes on both on a single road bike, with the rider pushing another road bike without tyres down the Tissington trail.

It would be OK but in the summer at weekends it can get quite busy. We have brilliant roads here if you are riding a road bike. I'd feel really stupid in proper road bike attire clipping and unclipping for dog walkers and the like.
